Chapter 11 | Tone, Style and Length
A good cover letter should sound professional, clear and human, it should not sound like a legal document, a motivational speech, or a generic AI output.
Tone confident, relevant, direct, warm, professional
Avoid begging, exaggerating, overselling, over-explaining, sounding robotic
Style use plain English; instead of:
“I am an exceptionally dynamic and results-orientated professional with a proven passion for excellence…”
Try:
“I bring experience in operational delivery, team leadership and service improvement, with a track record of supporting performance in fast-paced environments.”
Length for most applications 250–400 words, 3–5 short paragraphs, no dense blocks.
If the application asks for a supporting statement, that is diPerent, a supporting statement may need to be longer and address criteria in more detail; do not confuse a cover letter with a personal statement or supporting statement.
