Chapter 13 | Using AI Properly Without Sounding Generic
AI can be useful for cover letters, but only if you control the input.
If you simply ask “Write me a cover letter for this role” you will usually get something generic.
How to use AI properly
Give it: your CV, the job advert, your target direction, your strongest achievements, your tone preference, clear instructions not to invent anything!
Strong AI prompt
“Using the attached CV and job advert, please draft a concise UK English cover letter of around 300–350 words.
Focus on aligning my most relevant experience to the role requirements. Do not repeat the CV, do not invent metrics, avoid clichés, and use a professional but natural tone.”
Always check: does it sound like you, has it invented anything, is it too generic, is it too long, does it clearly connect you to the role?
AI should help structure your thinking, but it should not replace your judgement.
