Chapter 14 | Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Writing too much: more words do not mean more value.
2. Repeating the CV: the letter should frame the CV, not duplicate it.
3. Being too generic: if it could be sent to any employer, it is not tailored enough.
4. Overusing emotional language: passion is not a substitute for evidence.
5. Apologising for your background: do not write from a place of weakness (instead of:
“Although I do not have direct experience…” Try: “My background in [area] provides transferable experience in…”)
6. Ignoring the role requirements: the cover letter must connect to the vacancy.
7. Sounding like AI: avoid overly polished, vague and inflated wording.
8. Forgetting the reader: the reader needs relevance quickly.
Make it easy for them.
