Chapter 15 | Final Review Before Sending

Before sending your cover letter, ask:

• Is the role clearly named?

• Does the opening position me quickly?

• Have I connected my experience to the role?

• Have I included relevant evidence?

• Is it concise?

• Does it add something beyond my CV?

• Does it sound like me?

• Have I removed generic language?

• Is the company name correct?

• Is the job title correct?

• Is the spelling and formatting clean?

Final test, read it and ask:

“If I were recruiting for this role, would this letter make me want to read the CV properly?”

If yes, it is doing its job.

Final Thoughts

A cover letter is not always essential, but when it is used well, it can strengthen the application, it gives you a chance to explain relevance, context and fit in a way the CV cannot always do alone. The strongest cover letters are not long, but they are clear, they do not try to say everything, but they say the right things, in the right order, for that specific role.

Your cover letter should help the reader understand why this role, why your experience, and why this application makes sense!
