Chapter 7 | Opening Paragraph: Getting Straight to the Point
Your opening paragraph matters because it sets the tone, do not waste it by starting with “I am writing to apply for the role of…” it’s not wrong, but it is flat. Instead, combine the application statement with positioning.
Opening formula
“I am applying for the [Role Title] position, bringing experience in [area], with particular strengths in [strengths relevant to role].”
Example:
I am applying for the Operations Manager position, bringing experience across multi-site service delivery, team leadership and process improvement, with a strong track record of improving standards in high-volume environments.
This immediately tells the reader what role you are applying for, what your relevant background is, and why you may be worth reading further
If changing direction, use the opening to frame the move.
Example:
I am applying for the Learning and Development Coordinator position, bringing a background in teaching, coaching and structured learning delivery, with transferable experience in facilitation, learner engagement and curriculum planning.
If returning after a break
Example:
I am applying for the OTice Manager position, bringing previous experience in administration, diary management and client support, and now looking to return to a structured role where I can apply these strengths.
If stepping up
Example:
I am applying for the Senior Project Manager position, bringing project delivery experience across complex stakeholder environments, with increasing responsibility for governance, planning and cross-functional coordination.
The opening should be clear and direct, do not apologise, do not over-explain, and do not start with uncertainty.
