Chapter 8 | Middle Section: Showing Relevance and Fit

The middle section is where you connect your experience to the role; this is the part that often makes or breaks the letter.

Start with the employer’s needs; look back at the top requirements from the job advert, choose the most important two or three, then write a paragraph that says, in ePect: “I understand what this role needs, and my experience matches it.”

Useful structure

“My background includes [relevant experience], particularly across [key areas]. This aligns closely with your requirement for [role requirement], where my experience in [evidence] would be directly relevant.”

Example:

My background includes leading operational delivery across customer-facing environments, particularly across staTing, service standards and process improvement. This aligns closely with your requirement for someone able to manage day-to-day performance while improving consistency and team eTectiveness.

Keep it role-focused; do not write: “I have gained lots of experience over the years in many diPerent areas…”

That is too vague, instead, be specific: “I have built experience across stakeholder engagement, reporting, process improvement and service coordination, which aligns closely with the operational and communication demands of this role.”

Show fit without sounding desperate; avoid: “I believe I am the perfect candidate…”

Try: “My experience aligns strongly with the requirements of this role, particularly in…”
