Chapter 7. How to write your About section

Your About section is your professional positioning statement, however it is not a life story, and nor is it a copy of your CV profile. It should explain who you are, what you do, what you bring and where you are aligned.

A strong About section usually has four parts:

Opening positioning paragraph

Experience and strengths paragraph

Evidence or impact paragraph

Direction or closing statement

Start by answering these questions:

• Who am I professionally?

• What kind of roles or environments have I worked in?

• What problems do I help solve?

• What am I known for?

• What evidence supports this?

• What kind of role or opportunity am I aligned to next?

A simple structure:

Paragraph 1: Who you are and what you do

Paragraph 2: Your core strengths and experience

Paragraph 3: Evidence, outcomes or credibility

Paragraph 4: Direction, values or next-step alignment

Example structure:

I am a [professional identity] with experience across [sector/environment], specialising in [key areas]. I bring a strong track record in [strengths], with particular focus on [target relevance].

My background includes [scope/context], where I have been responsible for [responsibilities at level]. I am known for [known for], particularly in environments requiring [complexity/problem type].

Across my career, I have [evidence/impact], including [examples]. This has enabled me to [outcomes/value].

I am now focused on opportunities where I can apply [strengths] to [target role/direction].

Keep your About section readable; use short paragraphs, avoid dense blocks, do not overfill it with every detail. It should create interest, not exhaust the reader.
